When I first met with the client I was able to look at the space she had in mind and we began brainstorming what kind of pattern she would like. We started by looking at several patterns I have already done and ones that she had found that she liked. Instead of coming up with a brand new design, she chooses one that I had already done. However the colors of that original pieces did not quite work. The colors of her apartment were white, slate blue, gray, and silver.
She had chosen a pattern with large circles, so we went to the bathroom with several different size plates from her kitchen. We spent a long time holding up similarly sized plates and discussing the look and size of each one. I am so glad we ended up choosing a plate/circle size she had so that when I started I could just trace place to have the size of the pattern correct.
The next step was to go to my studio and create several different variations of color combinations we could use. For a couple of my tests I tried to add a color she didn’t have in her home (like purple) just to see if there was some combo that might surprise us by how well it worked.
Once she chose the colors she preferred, I purchased the paints and got to work. The whole process of painting it took me two weeks. When I started to go a bit cross eyed and crazed from standing in a tiny room staring at the walls for hours, I knew I had to stop for the day. I was so proud when I finished and the client was thrilled.
